Things To Do In and Around Fort William

The town of Fort William is in the Scottish highlands near the body of water acknowledged as Loch Linnhe and at the foot of Ben Nevis. As you would expect from a town that’s located in such an amazing place, viewing and enjoying the natural beauty of the area is a significant attraction for visitors to Fort William, but there are several other things that you can choose to keep busy doing which are likely to be only a few minutes from your Fort William B&B.

Climb Ben Nevis

Ben Nevis may not be reach as tall as Mount  Everest or any of the other big mountains  out there, but it does have the title of the tallest mountain in Britain and it is over 4,000 feet high, so it should be an ample challenge for most thrill seekers! Route maps and advice are available in Fort William, and there are also other mountains such as the Mamores to explore so you should find yourself very busy if you delight in hiking and climbing!

Learn About West Highland Culture

The western Scottish Highlands have a long and proud background and you can study it at the West Highland Museum, which is located just off Cameron sq in Fort William. The museum is free to check out but visitors are encouraged to leave a donation if they delight in their time there.

Go Snowboarding

With so many mountainous areas around Fort William, it’s no surprise that during the winter, the area is a magnet for snowboarders and skiers. If you’re an avid snowboarder, then check out the slopes over the time you’re in town in winter is a must do!

Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is an additional popular sport in Fort William, and the World Championships have been held in the mountains surrounding the town on a few time. Bring your own bike or rent one in town. Your Fort William bed and breakfast will probably have a storage area and drying facilities for any clothing and equipment.

The Jacobite Train

The Jacobite Train is an additional popular attraction, that travelers to Fort William often choose to take advantage of. It’s a regular steam train that winds through the mountains and stops in historic places along it’s journey through the West Highlands. A great way to see the landscape in luxury and style.

Buy Authentic Scottish Goods

From regular Scottish woollens to kilts, and of course, Scotch whisky, you will find all sorts of regular Scottish goodies for sale in the town of Fort William. There are many different clan crests and tartans to choose from, and you will probably find what you are hunting for somewhere in the town.

Eat and Drink

Fort William is also acknowledged for it’s delicious Scottish regular foods and most tourists are encouraged to at least try the haggis (although there is a vegetarian alternative for those who aren’t dedicated carnivores!) There are also plenty of other neighborhood treats, including fish from the lake, and meat that’s raised on the rich highlands, so you should find something utterly delicious somewhere in Fort William. There are also a fewregular (and a few not so regular) pubs in the village, so you should have no hassle finding somewhere to have a drink, mingle with the locals and warm up if you’re visiting in winter!
