6 Earth-Friendly Auto Tips

Recently Earth-friendly alternative-fuel and hybrid vehicles have gained major attention and an increasing market share.

But you don’t need to have old batteries lying around or buy a different vehicle to protect the environment. All you really need in the playbook of environmental consciousness are two “sets” of “plays” – maintaining your vehicle and practicing good driving habits.

So without further ado, here are six tips – all of them very easy and hassle free – that could help you care for your vehicle while being Earth-conscious.

The first tip would be to make sure your car’s engine is in top condition at all times. Your vehicle’s manufacturer would recommend a certain schedule for maintenance – follow it. If the “check engine” light flashes, then you shouldn’t hesitate to have your car’s engine checked ASAP.

You can find several auto repair shops, hopefully trustworthy ones, by relying on friends and family members’ suggestions, or combing the ‘net for results.

Check the air pressure in your car’s tires regularly. An underinflated tire, or tires would cause your engine to push farther than it could and, as a result, guzzle more gas in order to keep your vehicle moving.

When servicing your car’s air conditioning, you have to go with someone who has the proper certification and knows how to handle automotive refrigerants. Older air conditioning systems contain ozone-depleting chemicals that could be released into the atmosphere.

Some older vehicles use switches that contain highly toxic mercury to activate hood, trunk and glove-box lights. Many organizations now host mercury “switch out” programs in which these environmentally hazardous parts are removed for recycling and replaced with nontoxic mechanical switches.

Leave the blazing starts and over-the-speed-limit driving to the likes of Dom Toretto and Brian O’Connor of Fast and the Furious fame – try the same and you’ll get a speeding ticket while wasting precious fuel.

Properly dispose of engine fluids and batteries. If you don’t quite know how, your local waste management department can be your best friend. Engine fluid should never be disposed on the ground, because it could make its way to nearby bodies of water, resulting in pollution.

These tips are all very easy to follow, and if you do so to the letter, your car will perform better (though not necessarily faster – who needs that anyway these days?) and not be a hazard to our environment. In other words, when you “go green,” the Earth wins, your car wins — and you are the biggest winner of all!
