Friday is our last TV broadcast of News Carson City on Charter Cable Channel 18 at 6pm. We are shifting all our resources to our internet website, NewsCarsonCity.com.
For the past five years, the internet has grown to to become THE dominant way for people to get their news. It’s instant. It’s updated 24/7. And if you miss something in a story, you just scroll up or click on the video window again. Internet news sites are also able to give you the news when it happens. There is no 24 hour news cycle. The internet does not make you wait for a channel to get around to telling you what’s happening or when you can see it or read it. Even the cable news channels make you wait until they recycle THEIR sequence clock. What if you don’t want to wait? Too bad.
Although many TV viewers prefer to watch a 30 minute news program to get caught up on the world or their community, you really can’t shoe-horn the world or your community into that small of a time frame. The internet offers news and information buffet style. It’s huge. It’s varied. It’s wide ranging and you can read or watch what you want, when you want. It’s the way busy people stay informed and relaxed people graze the world. It’s wonderful.
So, 18 News: Carson City will join the legions of other news organizations that have decided to give a more timely and more complete accounting of their communities and the world by offering their news product on the internet. We regret the loss of any viewers because we won’t be on “the TV” anymore. But we trust they’ll come around and discover and enjoy the information bounty that is The Internet.
Again, after 15 years on TV, we’re headed exclusively upstairs where all the action is. We’ll see you all up here from here on!
