A message to NewsCarsonCity.com TV/Internet viewers and readers. Change is in the wind.

In order to better serve our community, News Carson City, TV and Internet, are changing. The change will transform NewsCarsonCity.com into more of a newspaper format, with more text than video. On the TV side, 18 News Carson City on Charter Cable will be more “still graphics” and video ONLY when video can add to stories and not slow them down.

Also, yours truly Dave Morgan, will be aiming my reporting energies into developing more stories that give a broader understanding of the community and the forces at work that are shaping its future. There will more stories. More windows that will open up for our opportunity to understand where we live, what’s going on behind and in front of “the scenes.” Carson City has too long been forced to accept a lot of shallow news coverage that fills pages of a newspaper or time on TV that offers only disjointed and often unrelated frames of a film that don’t really give a detailed picture of the town we live in. Such coverage does not reveal or engage those who are pulling the levers of power and control or what opportunities that might be out there.

A democracy can lift up a community and enrich it in so many ways ONLY if its townspeople know what’s going on. Then, and only then, can they participate and vote intelligently.

So, watch for our TV newscasts to get shorter and more muscular. And watch for our website to grow, not only in terms of the number of stories, but in their breadth of coverage and their depth.

The David Morgan voice on TV is about to become David Morgan the newspaper reporter on the internet. I foresee myself being a reporter for News Carson City for a very long time. Although my voice will no longer be on the TV, my news contributions will be far greater than at any time in my 20 years of offering news and public affairs on TV in Carson City.

Taking on supplemental reporter duties will be Josh Johnston, a very smart and tech-savvy young man in whom I have great faith and trust. It’s his voice you’ll hear on the TV in about six weeks. Video and still-picture contributions will also be coming from Chrissi and Keith Barnett who are likewise very smart and hardworking folks who are dedicated to a better and thriving Carson City.

Our sales team led by News Carson City/Our Town Sales Manager Jenni Middleton will be working closely with local business and industry, getting their stories out on TV and on the Internet. ” News Carson City” and “Our Town” offer worthwhile information and promotion partnerships between those who advertise and who also want to work more closely with the community. We partner with advertisers who care about Carson City. By their support, they help us better inform the community as to what’s going on and, in the process, enjoying a higher level of community awareness for their business and additional contributions they make to the town and its people. Too long they’ve been called mere “advertisers,” when in fact they are under-appreciated community partners who contribute and work for a better future for our town. We celebrate and promote their priceless gift.

NewsCarsonCity.com, TV, and Our Town Carson City are also launching monthly LIVE Town Hall public talk shows. They will be internet broadcast LIVE on the first Saturday of every month, 7:30pm, at Comma Coffee, corner of 4th and Carson. (We’re planning to launch our first show February 6th, 7:30pm, Comma Coffee.) The shows will broadcast live on the internet from the NewsCarsonCity.com website and will offer live interviews with the town’s political, social and economic leaders along with questions and answers from the audience at Comma Coffee. We’ll also be taking e-mail questions from viewers. After each live broadcast on the internet the shows will be available for “anytime” playback on NewsCarsonCity.com by clicking on the “Town Hall” button on the home page of the website.

And of course, Our Town Carson City, our 6pm weeknight talk show, which is combined with our nightly newscast, will continue to be anchored by Jenni Middleton. It’s an informal and informative program that highlights major events and issues going on around Carson City and the region. It’s our “reality check” with townspeople and leaders that work, live and play here. It’s growing in popularity as an effective and comfortable way to learn about “our town.”

We hope you’ll share with us your thoughts about all this and offer helpful suggestions as to how we can make News Carson City and Our Town Carson City perform even better for our community. Feel free to leave your comments here or call me on my cell phone at 232-0372. We’re in it for the long haul. And we know you are too. Let’s make Carson City a more thoughtful and better informed community with a better understanding of how good our future can be if we just pull together with clear minds, open hearts and honest public discussions.

You GO Dave! You and your crew share with those wise enough to view and read this site much more than we get from other news outlets.

I believe in and appreciate your devotion to your home town for it is something seriously lacking by so many this day in age.

If it serves you, I hope you know that many more people read and view this site than you may be aware of. We are out there.

Nice work Dave, all the way around. Your dedication is obvious and it shows with each article. Good luck with the new format, it sounds like it should work fine and be even more informative.

I prefer reading reports to the videos. I’ll always read the text, but rarely clicked through to the videos, so I applaud the new direction.

Thanks Sadge. It’s a little wounding to my TV career but I can’t help but agree with you. A proper length text story outperforms TV formats. However, when a story is made for TV, it’s a lifelong rememberance.

I agree with Sadge 100%. I also would much rather read the article. However I do appreciate the photo’s as a lead to the article.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Dave. Keith and I really look forward to working with you, Josh, Jenni and our Community Partners.
As we begin this new year, we can only imagine the changes that are coming to this genre. It is a very exciting time where we are going to get to stretch our wings a bit more.
So I say… watch this space and see what happens!

I’ve been proud to be working behind the scenes with Dave Morgan for the past few years, and have enjoyed working with Chrissi and Keith from my time with the Brewery Arts Center’s public access television program in the past. Jenni and Joan, our representatives on the street, are great people that I’ve been quite happy to be getting to know over the last few months as well. It is my sincere belief that the expanded “News Carson City” team will continue to provide our viewers, readers, and community partners with timely and accurate news reporting and service in the months and years to come.

Speaking for myself and myself only, I hope to prove worthy of the trust and faith that Dave has given me, as well as the trust that I hope to inherit from you – the community that makes this site what it truly is, and are the key ingredient to enabling it to become even more.
