Kitchen fire at University Heights Apartments

Carson City firefighters raced to a report of a kitchen fire at the University Heights Apartments during the noon hour today.

Fire units pulled up to find that the fire had done considerable damage already. They learned that neighbors had heard a smoke alarm and loud popping sounds which drew them to the downstairs kitchen area. Seeing smoke, they rushed into the commonly shared kitchen, found some food on fire on the stove, and set about putting the fire out. They ducked under the thick smoke, turned off the stove and then began throwing water on the flaming cabinets above the stove. That did the trick.

Still, fire fighters had to make sure the fire was completely out. They pulled the cabinets out of the wall, including the stove. And with a thermal imaging device they determined that the fire had not spread into the drywall around or behind the cabinets.

The task now is to find other cooking arrangments for the tenants who live on each side of the kitchen.

Lesson: If you’re going to cook potatos, make sure you have enough oil in the pan and you don’t leave the kitchen, even for a minute.
