Gov. Gibbons: Further budget cuts coming in 2-3 weeks

March 31st, 2008 by Dave Morgan.

Governor Gibbons told news reporters this afternoon that despite the state’s pot of red ink rising to $900 million, he’s still not talking state worker layoffs, for now.  But he is talking further budget cuts, although he says he wants to soften those cuts on K-12 education, public safety and prisons.

Gibbons told reporters that budget discussions with ranking state lawmakers, including top Democrats, are focused on getting through the next year without layoffs or crippling cuts to k-12 schools,  universities, community colleges and public safety.   Gibbons says after further meetings with lawmakers, he’ll announce what those cuts will be and to which state division.

State Budget Director Andrew Clinger told News Carson City that there might be an additional 3% cut to selective departments, including Health and Human Services but that has not been finalized.  He said the bulk of the cuts will hopefully come from major state construction projects that have not yet been started, like improvements to four state prisons and the so-called state University Health Sciences program.  No major highway projects, however, would be affected.   Clinger said if they can find another $52 million for next year’s budget, then there won’t be any layoffs.  But if economic conditions force it, then those layoffs would start with Health and Human Services.  He added that they’re hoping that $4-6 billion in mega-resort construction projects on the ‘Vegas Strip will boost Clark County’s tax contribution to the state budget to help turn things around.

Again, talks resume between Gibbons and lawmakers with a final set of cuts and projections within two to three weeks.

Two top gang members arrested after pursuit

March 30th, 2008 by Dave Morgan.

Two top Carson City gang members were arrested Sunday afternoon after sheriff’s deputies pursued them across the county line into Douglas. Deputies say what started out as a simple traffic stop for speeding developed into a pursuit that wound its way around south Carson Street, then south on Highway 395 into Douglas County. The chase went west on Jacks Valley Road, then south on Vista Grande to an apartment complex at the bottom of the hill. Inside the car was Cesar and Gabriel Nunez, both leaders of the Carson City faction of the Los Angeles-based Lima Street gang. As the two were being detained a passenger and several family members emerged from the apartment building. Deputies say they began chastising deputies and creating an “unstable” situation while both Munoz’s were being arrested. During the confrontation another passenger in the car became a problem and he was arrested as well, identified as Luis Rizzo.

Gabriel Munoz, the driver, was arrested and booked for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, eluding deputies, obstructing deputies, possession of burglary tools, speeding, obstructed windshield and child endangerment. An infant was in the jeep at the time.

Cesar Munoz, the brother of the driver, was arrested and booked on a parole and probation warrant.

Luis Rizzo was arrested for obstructing officers.

The Munoz brothers have been very active gang members in Carson City for years, including shootings.

How deep is the divide in our “2 party system?”

March 30th, 2008 by Dave Morgan.

A recent news article quoting Nevada Republican U.S. Senator John Ensign says it all.

Ensign, who is chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee said “it’s doubtful that the November elections will yield additional GOP seats in the Senate. ” But Ensign went on to say something very revealing about the deep psychological differences between the parties, Republicans and Democrats.

Ensign said he hopes the November elections will produce at least a status quo for Senate Republican seats at 49, but “our chances are not that good because the numbers are stacked against us.” He also pointed out Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his Democratic Senatorial Committee “have a fundraising edge.”

“…the numbers are stacked against us….Democrats have a fundraising edge.”

It appears that Sen. Ensign is citing these points as causes of the drop in Republican fortunes, rather than the result of something else. It hardly takes a brain surgeon (or a skilled veterinarian) to see through this distractive exercise whether you’re a Democrat or Republican. It’s a bit like saying “Our car ran off the road and crashed, and now we’re stuck! THOSE DARN TREES!” (Note: Driver not to blame)

Our two political parties have been talking over and around each other for too long. The American public (a non-partisan pronoun) is fed up with all the partisan noise about who is ‘really’ patriotic and who’s going to Hell. They want solutions to real problems, which demand real work.

If the Republicans lose in November it’s not the fault of the trees. It will be that our country’s Republican leadership, for some time, has not been willing or able to see the forest for the trees.

Carson Senators split with Douglas Tigers

In a riveting last half of the 7th inning the Carson Senators managed to come from a 9 to 4 deficit to beat the Douglas Tigers 10 to 9 in their first of a double header.  Senator center fielder Drew Good hammered a line drive down the left base line to drive in the final two runs needed to win by a one run margin.

However, in game two, a motivated Douglas Tigers team raked up five runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back, eventually beating the Senators in game two 14 to 10.

Throughout the two games, Coach Steve Cook kept rotating pitchers like a merry-go-round trying to “find some consistency”, as he put it, in his pitching stable.

Coach Cook said his team played well in both games, but simply ran out of time to catch Douglas who had run up the score early.  The three games with Douglas this week came out 2 and 1, Douglas.

Next week, Carson plays a three game series with Hug High.  The first game Thursday afternoon at Ron McNutt Field.  Then, on Saturday, a double header at Hug.
